60% Energy Savings with New BarkerBille Fans

BarkerBille was contacted by IFF, producer of products for the food industry, with a request to look at replacement of two old fans with new, more energy efficient ones. After a visit and some measurements at their production plant, it was evident that we could help them optimize their processing plant.

Before installing the BarkerBille fans on site, IFF’s annual energy consumption was 810,000 kWh. After the installations, this was reduced to 320,000 kWh, a decrease of over 60%.

The new fans are direct-driven, which is an optimization for IFF compared to the old belt-driven fans that use significantly more energy. The old, inefficient electric motors and dampers have also been replaced.

Another significant saving for IFF comes from using the installed frequency converters and control system, as the fan speed can be adjusted during idle operation. With the old fans, IFF had to run them at 50 Hz constantly, but they now expect to reduce that to approx. 15 Hz for 15% of the operating time.

High-Efficiency Fans for Boilers

These six high efficiency fans were designed and supplied by BarkerBille for two identical biomass boiler lines.

All six fans were equipped with Siemens synchronous reluctance IE4 motors as per customer request. The synchronous reluctance technology enables very high levels of efficiency at the rated operating point and under partial load, with both high-power density and high dynamic performance.

So, in addition to the high efficiency thanks to BarkerBille fan design, with this type of motor the fans achieve additional efficiency and sustainability with a reduced CO2 emissions.

The synchronous reluctance motors are more expensive than the traditional asynchronous, but the payback time is usually short – often less than one year. At the same time, the service life of these motors is often much longer as they do not overheat.
